The easy, homemade Cranberry Chipotle Glaze combines the sweet tartness of cranberries, the smoky heat from chipotles, with a subtle maltiness. When it’s roasted on a juicy, bone-in ham, the crispy, bubbly, caramelized perfection of this glaze will make your mouth water!
I love when you find a sauce or glaze that can be used in more than one way, especially when it’s something slightly new and wonderful to your family and guests.
While it was a home run on these Cranberry Chipotle Glazed Wings, it made the best Christmas ham my family has ever had!
How to make an Oven Roasted Cranberry Glazed Ham
Preparation is very easy.
Let the ham sit at room temperature for an hour.
Simmer together the ingredients for Cranberry Chipotle Glaze for 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, place the bone-in, pre-cooked ham in a roasting or cake pan with the cut side down. I used a 9×13.
Add 1/2 of a cup of water, beer, wine, or stock.
Cover the roasting pan very tightly with foil.
Roast a precooked ham at 325 degrees for 10-12 minutes per pound or until the internal temperature is 125-135 degrees. If the ham is partially cooked, cook until 155-160 degrees internally. A meat thermometer is a must. I use this thermometer.
Brush on the Cranberry Chipotle Glaze and broil for 3-5 minutes until the glaze is bubbly and fragrant. Serve with additional sauce on the side.
Rest the ham before slicing and/or serving.
Tips for how to make a juicy and moist ham.
- According to the USDA, a fully cooked ham DOES NOT have to be heated to a high temperature!
- The goal is to warm it, NOT to cook it more!
- Choose a ham with a bone in it. It is less processed and retains moisture better.
- Low and slow temperature is better.
- Moisture! Cook with 1/2 cup of water or stock in the bottom of the roasting pan and cover very tightly with foil until the Cranberry Chipotle Glaze is applied.
- Do not cook past 135 degrees and let it rest for 20 minutes before slicing.
