Pizza Sloppy Joes

Crumbles of Italian sausage, marinara, sauteed mushrooms, onions, and green peppers, pepperoni slices, and melty mozzarella cheese all served up on a toasted bun. It's pizza but Sloppy Joe style!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Italian Sausage - bulk or removed from casings
  • 16 ounces Marinara or Red Sauce approx 2 cups
  • 1/2 cup onion - diced
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper - diced
  • 1 cup mushrooms - white or cremini sliced
  • 1/2 cup pepperoni - quartered
  • 4 buns - hamburger, bakery, deli, or sliders style
  • 4 slices mozzarella cheese shredded cheese may be substituted

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to broil.
  • On the stove top, cook ground Italian bulk sausage in a large skillet on a medium heat for 6-8 minutes.
  • When sausage is almost cooked through, add diced onion, green pepper, and sliced mushrooms.
  • Continue cooking until sausage begins to brown (165 degrees) and vegetables are tender-crisp, about another 5 minutes.
  • Drain any excess drippings if necessary.
  • Add Red Sauce or Marinara, stir to combine, and continue to cook until the sauce is heated through.
  • Place open bun halves, interior facing up, on a large baking sheet.
  • Place pizza sloppy joe mixture on the open bun bottoms and top with the cheese.
  • Broil for 2-4 minutes until cheese is melted and bun top is toasted.
  • Assemble Pizza Sloppy Joe sandwich and enjoy!

Notes

This recipe is very easy to double.  If doing so, use 2 pounds of Italian sausage for a standard 28 oz jar of marinara.
